Every brand we review is judged against the PetPlayEssentials “P.A.W.S.” Standard—a proprietary rating system designed to give you a clear, honest, and cat-first assessment every single time.

Our Four Core Pillars Of Quality

Our P.A.W.S. standard judges every food across four critical, equally-weighted pillars. A food must excel in all four areas to receive our top marks.

P – Primal Nutrition (Species-Appropriateness)
Your cat is a strict carnivore. Their body is optimized for a diet rich in animal protein and moisture, with very few carbohydrates. Our rating system rewards foods that respect this primal blueprint. High scores go to moisture-rich, high-protein recipes that use named meats as their primary ingredients. Foods that rely heavily on plant-based fillers are penalized.

A – Accountable Ingredients (Quality & Sourcing)
You deserve to know exactly what is in your cat’s bowl. We reward brands that use high-quality, human-grade ingredients and are transparent about where they source their meat and produce. Foods with ambiguous ingredients like “meat by-products” or artificial colours, flavours, and preservatives are heavily marked down. Accountability is a non-negotiable for quality.

W – Real-World Usability (Product Variety & Cat Acceptance)
Great nutrition is useless if your cat refuses to eat it. This pillar judges how a food performs in a real home. We look for a variety of textures for picky eaters and a range of proteins for rotational feeding. A high score means the product is not only nutritious but also practical, palatable, and offers good value for its quality.

S – Safety & Brand Trust (Recall History & Aussie Focus)
This is our final, and most important, deal-breaker. A brand’s history is a predictor of its future performance. We perform a deep dive into their recall history, their reputation among Australian consumers, and their customer service reliability. Only brands with a proven track record of safety and transparency can earn our highest ratings.

The Grading System
Each brand is scored from 1-10 in our four P.A.W.S. pillars, for a total score out of 40. This is then converted into a simple, at-a-glance letter grade. This system allows you to easily compare brands and make a confident, informed decision for your cat’s health.
